PETZL Lighting and Lithium Batteries
Tests that have been done by Petzl have highlighted the possibility of lithium AA and AAA
batteries damaging torches using LEDs.
The performance characteristics of lithium AA and AAA have advanced in order to provide high
power discharge performance, particularly for digital camera use. Unfortunately this discharge
characteristic may cause overheating and damage to LED lights.
Please note that this affects most brands using LEDs, not only Petzl.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE: The new e+LITE which is supplied with lithium batteries, is NOT affected by this
problem.
We do not know if other suppliers are yet aware of the effect these battery changes may have on
their products.
The list below indicates Petzl lighting models that are OK to use
lithium batteries.
OK with LITHIUM BATTERIES
• e+LITE
• Myo, MyoLite, Myo 5, MyoBelt 5, MyoBelt SB5
• Duo 14, DuoBelt 14, Duo 8, DuoBelt 8
• Micro, Saxo
Not recommended for use with LITHIUM BATTERIES
• Tikka / Zipka models
• MyoLite 3, Myo 3, MyoBelt 3, Myo XP
• Duo 3, Duo 5, DuoBelt 5
• Saxo Aqua
The use of AA/LR6 or AAA/LR3 lithium batteries in Petzl headlamps remains quite rare, and does
not present any direct security risk for the user. However, Petzl and the UK distributor Lyon
Equipment, consider it their duty to inform customers on this subject, in order to always increase
their satisfaction, and also reduce after-sales issues.
They will inform end-users in these ways:
• on the web site www.petzl.fr
• via the media
• in the longer term, via the technical notice supplied with each product
We ask you to inform your readers about this subject.
